AI-Designed Viruses Raise Biosafety Concerns Amid Scientific Advancements
Scientists have successfully created the first viruses designed by artificial intelligence, specifically bacteriophages that target bacteria. This development, led by Dr. Brian Hie at Stanford University, demonstrates the potential for AI to revolutionize phage therapy and biotechnology. However, the creation of AI-designed viral genomes has raised significant biosafety and biosecurity concerns. Experts, including those from Johns Hopkins University, emphasize the need for governance to ensure the safe use of this technology. The AI models used were trained on bacteriophage data, intentionally excluding genetic codes for viruses that could infect humans, animals, or plants to mitigate risks.
