Frijoles Fire in New Mexico Expands, Prompting Evacuations and Firefighting Efforts
The Frijoles Fire in northern New Mexico has grown to over 6,214 acres, with zero containment reported. The fire, which started on August 4 due to lightning, is located in steep terrain within the Pecos Wilderness Area. Firefighting efforts are underway, with 133 personnel involved in constructing indirect containment lines and using air tankers and helicopters to drop retardant and water. The fire's spread is exacerbated by high temperatures, low humidity, and strong winds. Evacuations have been ordered for areas in Santa Fe County, with an evacuation center set up at Pojoaque Valley Middle School Gym. The Incident Management Team is coordinating with local counties and tribes, and additional resources are expected to arrive. The public is advised to avoid the fire area and be aware of smoke impacting nearby communities.
