Bangladesh Garment Industry Faces Production Challenges Amid Gas Supply Crisis
The Bangladesh garment industry is currently grappling with a significant gas supply crisis, which has led to a reduction in production capacity by 30-40 percent, according to the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA). Despite these challenges, the BGMEA has stated that factories are maintaining production at 60-70 percent capacity with government support. The association has dismissed reports of factory closures due to gas and power shortages as false. However, production in certain areas, such as the Savar-Ashulia industrial belt, has reportedly fallen by 50-60 percent due to low gas pressure and frequent power outages. This has raised concerns about the timely fulfillment of export orders.
