New Mexico Judge Orders Meta to Implement Child Safeguards on Social Media Platforms
A New Mexico judge has issued a landmark ruling against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, mandating new safety measures to protect children on its platforms. The ruling includes a fine of $567 million and requires Meta to implement a 90-hour monthly usage limit for users under 18, restrict AI chatbot interactions, and display mandatory warnings. These measures are intended to mitigate the psychological harm associated with social media use among minors. The ruling follows a previous jury decision that imposed $375 million in civil penalties on Meta for knowingly harming children's mental health and concealing information about child exploitation. Meta plans to appeal the ruling, which currently applies only to New Mexico.
