European Commission Seeks Feedback on Steel Traceability Documentation
The European Commission has initiated a consultation process to gather feedback from stakeholders on the documentation required for implementing the 'melt-and-pour' traceability requirements under the EU Steel Regulation. This consultation, lasting four weeks, aims to involve steel producers, users, traders, importers, and industry associations to determine the most effective documentation for verifying the origin of steel imported into the EU. The feedback will inform the preparation of an Implementing Act, expected to be adopted by August 31, 2026, and enforced from October 1, 2026. The regulation mandates importers to identify the country where the steel was originally melted and poured, addressing global steel overcapacity projected to reach 721 million tonnes by 2027.
