Texas Governor Pushes for Accelerated Construction of Fly-Breeding Facility to Combat Cattle Parasite
Texas Governor Greg Abbott has expressed urgency in accelerating the construction of a new fly-breeding facility to combat the New World screwworm, a flesh-eating parasite threatening the U.S. cattle industry. The facility, located near Edinburg, Texas, is part of a $750 million effort by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) to breed sterile flies to control the parasite. The screwworm was recently detected in a calf in La Pryor, Texas, marking the first case in the state since 1966. Governor Abbott has pledged state support to expedite the facility's construction, emphasizing the need for increased sterile fly production to prevent further outbreaks.
