19th-Century Schooner Wreck in Lake Michigan Gains National Historic Protection
The shipwreck of the 19th-century schooner FJ King, located in Lake Michigan near Liberty Grove, Door County, has been added to the National Register of Historic Places. This designation follows its discovery in June of the previous year by the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Wisconsin Underwater Archaeology Association. The FJ King, built in 1867, was a wooden schooner known for transporting cargo across the Great Lakes. It sank in 1886 after a heavy gale caused a leak that led to its abandonment. The wreck remains intact on the lake floor, with the hull preserved and visible damage at the bow.
