Decline in Computer Science Enrollment Linked to Rise of AI Tools
For the first time in two decades, computer science enrollment has declined, coinciding with the rise of AI tools like ChatGPT. According to research by Jacob Light, an economist at Stanford University's Hoover Institution, the 2025-26 academic year saw a drop in computer science enrollment, with National Student Clearinghouse data showing an 8.1% decrease in undergraduate enrollment in related fields. While the study does not directly attribute the decline to AI, it suggests that the growing capabilities of AI tools may be influencing students' perceptions of the field's value. The decline comes after years of rapid growth in computer science enrollment, driven by high demand for tech workers.
