Rep. Andrew Garbarino Proposes Resolution for Mandatory 9/11 Education in All States
Rep. Andrew Garbarino, R-N.Y., has introduced a resolution advocating for all U.S. states to mandate the teaching of the September 11 attacks in their public school curricula. This initiative comes as approximately one-third of Americans were born after the 2001 attacks, making school education a primary source of information about the event for many young adults. A recent Pew Research Center poll indicates that about 60% of young adults in the U.S. first learned about 9/11 through their schooling. While at least 40 states currently suggest or expect public schools to address 9/11, the scope, specificity, and framing of these provisions vary significantly. For instance, a 2023 Florida law specifies 45 minutes of instruction on 9/11 for certain middle and high school courses, while Texas frames it as an example of 'radical Islamic terrorism.' Other states like Colorado and New Mexico encourage discussions on the aftermath, including Middle Eastern discrimination or post-9/11 wars and legislation.
