Utah Schools Increase Security with Armed Guardians in 60% of Schools
The Utah School Guardian Program, now in its second year, has expanded to include armed guardians in 60% of the state's schools. This initiative, overseen by State Security Chief Matt Pennington, aims to enhance school security by having trained personnel on campus. The program, also known as House Bill 84 or the School Security Act, has seen success in regions like Washington County, where up to five guardians are stationed in each school. However, challenges remain, with 40% of schools still lacking armed personnel. Recruitment and training coordination are significant hurdles, as is the removal of a state-funded stipend for participating faculty.
