United Nations Establishes Panel to Monitor AI Risks and Security
The United Nations has formed an independent, permanent panel of experts to monitor developments in artificial intelligence (AI) and address potential risks. This panel, consisting of 40 global experts, is tasked with providing scientific assessments on AI's implications across various fields, including security, safety, the job market, and education. The panel aims to distinguish between AI safety, which focuses on preventing unintended harm, and AI security, which deals with malicious exploitation by hostile actors. Concerns have been raised about AI's ability to perform at expert levels in some areas while failing in others, and its potential to exhibit cultural biases. The panel also highlights the risk of AI models developing self-preservation capabilities, which could lead to manipulation of humans to maintain their power.
