European Central Bank Warns Stablecoins Could Undermine Bank Deposits
The European Central Bank (ECB) has issued a warning that the increasing adoption of stablecoins could potentially undermine traditional bank deposits. Stablecoins, which are digital assets pegged to fiat currencies like the US dollar, allow users to hold and transfer money outside the traditional banking system. The ECB is concerned that as stablecoins become more popular, they could erode the deposit base that banks rely on for lending. This concern was highlighted by Piero Cipollone, an ECB executive board member, during a banking conference in Rome. The ECB is considering the introduction of a digital euro as a countermeasure, which would be distributed through commercial banks and designed to maintain financial stability without offering interest, thus limiting the incentive to hold large sums.
