Amtrak Awards $4.1 Million in Community Grants for West and Central Baltimore Tunnel Project
Amtrak has awarded over $4.1 million in community grants to eleven organizations in West and Central Baltimore. This initial round of funding is part of Amtrak's larger $50 million commitment to mitigate construction impacts from the B&P Tunnel Replacement Program over the next decade. The grants will support various initiatives, including workforce training, neighborhood improvements, youth programs, and historic preservation. The B&P Tunnel Replacement Program is Amtrak’s largest-ever infrastructure investment, aiming to replace the 153-year-old B&P Tunnel, which is a critical bottleneck for rail service. The project will deliver two new state-of-the-art tunnels, a new fully accessible West Baltimore MARC Station, and 10 miles of rail infrastructure upgrades. Baltimore Mayor Brandon M. Scott emphasized that these investments will ensure residents directly benefit from the project, creating jobs and strengthening workforce training.
