UN Migration Agency Warns of Rising Human Trafficking for Online Scam Centers
The United Nations' migration agency has issued a warning about the increasing trend of human trafficking for online scam operations. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), criminal networks are luring individuals, particularly educated English speakers, with fake job advertisements. These individuals are then trafficked to work in scam centers, primarily across Asia. The IOM has reported assisting over 3,500 victims from nearly 40 countries, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Bangladesh. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime estimates that these operations resulted in losses of up to $114 billion last year in regions such as East Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
