Colorado Faces Rising Homeowners Insurance Due to Weather Disasters
Colorado is experiencing a significant increase in homeowners insurance premiums, with rates rising by 65% over the past five years. This surge places Colorado among the top ten most expensive states for homeowners insurance in the United States. The increase is largely attributed to frequent and severe weather events, such as fires, storms, hail, and floods, which have caused over $1 billion in damages each since 1980. Most of these disasters have occurred in the last decade, highlighting the growing impact of climate change on the region. In response, Colorado lawmakers are proposing a new bill to mitigate these costs by establishing a fund to support the installation of hail-resistant roofs, aiming to reduce future damage and insurance claims.
