Heat Waves Disrupt Sleep Across the Globe, Study Finds
Heat waves are currently affecting regions such as Southern California, the Southwest U.S., North Africa, the Middle East, and Southern Europe, leading to widespread sleep disruptions. According to Climate Central, elevated nighttime temperatures caused the average person to lose nearly 56 hours of sleep annually between 2020 and 2025. The issue is exacerbated by urban heat islands, where cities retain more heat at night compared to rural areas. Vulnerable populations, including those without air conditioning, women, and individuals over 65, are particularly affected. The study analyzed 1,338 cities globally, finding that sleep loss due to heat has doubled since the 1970s, with climate change playing a significant role.
