Congressman Cuellar Reacts to Federal Report on ICE Spending Mismanagement
Congressman Henry Cuellar has reacted to a federal report indicating that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other agencies have allegedly mismanaged significant funds intended for increasing immigrant detention capacity. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) documented costly issues in several initiatives undertaken by ICE since President Trump returned to the White House in January 2025, when he ordered mass detentions and deportations of individuals unlawfully present in the country. The GAO report specifically highlights $3 million spent on tents in Guantanamo, $7 million wasted on food for a Texas facility, and $20 million spent by ICE on warehouses that were subsequently sold. Congressman Cuellar expressed concern that these expenditures were made without congressional consultation and that the funds were ultimately wasted on unused facilities, affecting public trust. He is calling for investigations by the Office of the Inspector General (GIO) into this alleged misuse of funds.
