Southern Ground Hornbill Faces Endangerment in South Africa Due to Habitat Loss and Other Threats
The Southern Ground Hornbill, native to South Africa, is experiencing a significant decline in population due to various threats. These include habitat loss, persecution, slow reproductive rates, electrocution, and illegal capture for trade. The species, Bucorvus leadbeateri, is listed as Vulnerable on the global IUCN Red List, but within South Africa, Namibia, and Eswatini, it is classified as Endangered. The bird's range in South Africa has decreased by approximately 65-70% over three generations, with a population reduction of around 50%. The species requires large territories and is heavily dependent on protected areas. Breeding success is influenced by environmental factors such as rainfall and temperature, with low winter rainfall and higher temperatures negatively impacting breeding.
