Upstate NY Crypto Mine Seeks Transformation into Data Center Amid Environmental Concerns
The Greenidge Generation plant in the Finger Lakes, known for its bitcoin mining operations, is seeking to transform into a data center despite Governor Kathy Hochul's moratorium on new facilities. The plant, now rebranded as Vulcan Infrastructure and Power, is requesting 200 megawatts of additional power from the grid. Local residents and environmental groups have long opposed the facility due to pollution concerns affecting tourism and agriculture. Hochul's executive order pauses permits for data centers using 50 megawatts or more of power until a study on their impact is completed. Vulcan's rebranding reflects the AI boom, but environmental advocates argue it poses similar threats as its previous operations.
