Reading Marks International Overdose Awareness Day with Flag-Raising Ceremony
A flag-raising ceremony was held in City Park, Reading, to observe International Overdose Awareness Day. The event, organized by the SOS Berks Opioid Coalition and the City of Reading, provided an opportunity for approximately 30 attendees to reflect on and remember individuals in Berks County who have died from overdose. Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the importance of reducing the stigma associated with addiction. State Senator Judy Schwank noted that progress is being made in combating the opioid crisis, with overdose deaths declining nationally and across Pennsylvania. She attributed this decline to proactive state approaches and programs funded by opioid settlement funds. Berks County Commissioner Michael Rivera, who chairs SOS Berks, highlighted that overdose affects people of all ages and from every part of the county, stressing the need for compassion.
