Boston Expands Curbside Food Waste Collection Program to Combat Landfill Waste
Boston is actively expanding its Curbside Food Waste Collection program, which began in 2022, to address the significant issue of food waste. Currently, approximately 27,000 residents participate in weekly free food-waste collection. The city offers several composting options, including free city pickup, drop-off at city-sponsored bins (Project Oscar), and the option to hire private pickup services. This initiative is part of Boston's broader goal to achieve carbon neutrality and zero waste by 2050. The program aims to divert food scraps, such as old salad, eggshells, and leftover chicken, from landfills, where they produce methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Boston ranks fourth nationally in food composting among major U.S. cities, with other cities like Washington, D.C., also seeing significant growth in their food waste collection programs. The success of these programs largely depends on resident participation and the convenience of the composting options provided.
