Justice Department Drops Charges Against California Labor Leader in Protest Case
The Justice Department has decided to drop its criminal case against David Huerta, the president of the Service Employees International Union California, who was arrested during a protest against the Trump administration's immigration policies. The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles filed a motion to dismiss the case, citing Huerta's compliance with pretrial release terms. Huerta was initially charged with felony obstruction, which was later reduced to a misdemeanor. His arrest had sparked widespread protests and criticism from union leaders and immigrant advocates, who viewed the charges as an attempt to silence dissent.
