Tokyo's Average Salary Ranks Low Among Global Cities, Impacting Economic Perception
Tokyo, despite being one of the world's largest economic centers, ranks 39th out of 69 major global cities in terms of average monthly salaries. The average take-home salary in Tokyo is $2,394, placing it below cities such as Dubai, Toronto, Berlin, Seoul, and Auckland. This figure is less than one-third of Zurich's average salary, which leads the ranking at $8,363. The data, based on a 2026 analysis by Deutsche Bank, highlights a significant disparity in earnings among global cities. The U.S. cities dominate the top of the list, with San Francisco ranking second globally at $7,601, followed by Boston, New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, all within the top ten.
