U.S. Department of Transportation Approves Air Taxi Pilot Programs Across 26 States
The U.S. Department of Transportation has approved eight pilot programs for electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, commonly known as air taxis, across 26 states. These 100% electric vehicles resemble drones but operate like helicopters, offering a potential solution to urban congestion by providing quick airport transfers. Joby Aviation, supported by Delta Air Lines, has already conducted demonstration flights between Manhattan and JFK Airport, reducing travel time to just 10 minutes. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is keen to expedite the development of the air taxi industry, with some locations in the U.S. potentially seeing operational air taxis as early as this year. Los Angeles is also preparing for an air taxi program in time for the 2028 Olympics.
