New Understanding of Ovarian Cancer Origins Could Lead to Risk Reduction
Recent research has revealed that nearly all fatal ovarian cancers originate in the fallopian tubes rather than the ovaries. This discovery is changing the approach to ovarian cancer prevention, with experts like Dr. Rebecca Stone from Johns Hopkins advocating for the removal of fallopian tubes during other abdominal surgeries to reduce cancer risk. This procedure, known as salpingectomy, has been shown to significantly decrease the risk of tubo-ovarian cancer. Despite its potential benefits, awareness and insurance coverage for this preventive measure remain limited.
