Solomon Islands Gold Mine Landslide: Search for Survivors Underway
A landslide occurred at the Gold Ridge mine in the Solomon Islands, leading to a search for survivors. The incident took place at a Chinese-owned mine located approximately 25 kilometers southeast of Honiara, the capital. Local media reported that 10 bodies have been recovered, although officials have not confirmed a death toll. Residents, including those not employed by the mine, were reportedly accessing the site to search for gold and are believed to be among the victims. Emergency services, including police and engineers, are involved in the recovery efforts, which are complicated by the need for machinery to clear debris. The mine is a significant contributor to the local economy, accounting for nearly a quarter of the country's GDP last year.
