North Carolina Teen's Cardiac Arrest Renews Focus on AED Accessibility in Schools
The tragic death of Caden Sorrell, a 13-year-old Guilford County football player who suffered cardiac arrest during practice, has reignited discussions about the critical importance of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in schools. Sorrell collapsed during a Northwest Guildford Middle School football practice and died days later in the hospital. While the exact cause remains unknown, doctors suggested a possible underlying genetic condition. This incident follows other high-profile cases, such as NFL player Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest, which brought national attention to AEDs. In response to such events, North Carolina has implemented a new rule, tucked into the most recent state budget, requiring every school to have an AED. The 'Smart Heart Act' allocates $4 million to ensure AEDs are accessible on school campuses, mandating they be clearly marked and usable within three minutes of an emergency.
