U.S. Court Allows Lawsuits Against Tech Firms Over Social Media Addiction
A U.S. appeals court has ruled that Meta Platforms, Alphabet's Google, ByteDance's TikTok, and Snap Inc's Snapchat must face thousands of lawsuits alleging that their platforms are designed to be addictive to young users. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected the companies' appeal to dismiss over 3,000 lawsuits, stating that Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act does not provide immunity from such claims. The court also denied Meta's request to delay a trial involving 29 state attorneys general, who allege that the company illegally collected children's data and misled consumers about platform safety.
