Meta Smart Glasses Face Ban Calls in Germany Over Surveillance Fears
German non-profit group HateAid has filed a criminal complaint against Meta, Ray-Ban, Oakley, and several eyewear retailers, seeking a ban on the sale of Meta's AI glasses, the Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer, in Germany. HateAid argues that these smart glasses violate Germany's Telecommunications, Digital Services, and Data Protection Act. The group contends that the glasses are indistinguishable from ordinary eyewear, creating a risk of 'image-based digital violence' and disguising 'particularly inconspicuous surveillance technology as an everyday object.' German public photography laws are stricter than those in many other EU countries, generally prohibiting the photographing or filming of individuals without prior consent. HateAid's petition calls for a complete ban on the glasses in Germany and demands that they be made 'clearly identifiable,' suggesting color-coding the cameras, despite the glasses already having a built-in white LED light that blinks during recording.
