Hawaii Governor Signs Legislation for 50% Reduction in Transportation Emissions by 2045
Governor Josh Green of Hawaii has signed Senate Bill 2999, now Act 258, which establishes a statewide Clean Fuel Standard. This legislation aims to reduce the carbon intensity of transportation fuels by 50% from 2019 levels by 2045. The initiative includes a market-based credit system to encourage investment in cleaner fuels and electric transportation. Hawaii's Department of Transportation will oversee the program, using the Argonne National Laboratory GREET model to measure emissions across a fuel's lifecycle. The state joins California, Oregon, Washington, and New Mexico in adopting such standards.
