Minnesota Lawmakers Discuss Modernization of Aging State IT Systems
Minnesota lawmakers convened the first meeting of the new Legislative Commission on Human Services to address the modernization of the state's aging IT systems. Some of these systems, which are crucial for determining eligibility and administering human services, are nearly 40 years old. The Minnesota legislature previously passed a framework to renovate these systems, allocating $75 million to fund a comprehensive revamp. The commission's primary task is to develop recommendations for the legislature next spring to advance these modernization efforts. During the meeting, various state agencies presented on the current state of their IT systems, and county leaders urged lawmakers to adopt a balanced approach, focusing on both immediate needs and long-term strategic goals. Senator Melissa Wiklund (DFL-Bloomington) emphasized the commission's role in helping the legislature understand and support policy development and funding for these projects.
