High School Students Debate AI Use in Schoolwork and Its Implications for Cheating
The integration of generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini in educational settings has sparked a debate among students about what constitutes cheating. At Sequoia Union High School District, the use of AI to generate answers without teacher authorization is considered cheating and plagiarism. The M-A Chronicle interviewed nine students to explore their views on AI use in schoolwork. The students were presented with various scenarios, ranging from using AI to clarify assignment questions to having AI complete entire assignments. Opinions varied, with some students seeing AI as a helpful tool for understanding and learning, while others viewed its use as a shortcut that undermines educational integrity. The district's policy clearly defines unauthorized AI use as cheating, but students' perspectives often depend on the context and the teacher's policies.
