Federal Appeals Court Overturns Conviction of Subway Bomber for Providing Material Support to ISIS
A federal appeals court has overturned the conviction of Akayed Ullah, the 2017 New York City subway bomber, for providing material support to ISIS. Ullah detonated a pipe bomb in a Manhattan transit station, injuring several people. Although he was inspired by ISIS propaganda, the Second Circuit Court of Appeals found that Ullah acted independently and did not have direct communication with the terrorist group. The court upheld his other convictions, including committing a terrorist attack against mass transportation systems. This ruling could impact how terrorism-related cases are prosecuted, particularly those involving individuals radicalized by online propaganda.
