Nutrition Experts Caution Against Protein Restriction for Longevity, Citing Risks for Older Adults
Nutrition experts are advising caution regarding recent research suggesting that dietary protein restriction could promote metabolic health, healthspan, and lifespan. A review paper published in Cell Press Blue, drawing on 350 previously published research papers, proposed biological mechanisms for the benefits of protein restriction. However, experts like Stuart Phillips, a professor of kinesiology at McMaster University, described the study as "a beautiful mouse story, sold as human advice," emphasizing that much of the evidence came from animal research and cannot be directly translated to humans. They warn that following such advice could pose serious health risks for older adults, individuals with sedentary lifestyles, and those using GLP-1 weight loss medications, potentially leading to increased frailty, falls, and higher mortality.
