Yurok Tribe Reclaims Redwood Land, Enhancing Public Access and Salmon Habitat
The Yurok Tribe has regained control of 125 acres of land near the Redwood National and State Parks in Northern California, marking a significant return of ancestral territory. This land transfer, announced by the Save the Redwoods League, is described as a 'transformational agreement' that emphasizes tribal land-management practices and the protection of critical salmon habitats. The area, now known as the O Rew Redwoods Gateway, will open to the public on August 1, offering new trails and access to previously unseen parts of California. The restoration efforts have already seen the return of endangered juvenile coho salmon and other wildlife, highlighting the ecological benefits of the project.
