Researchers Identify Brain Receptor Mechanism for Weight Loss Drugs
Researchers at the Institute of Metabolic Science, University of Cambridge, have discovered how both stimulating and blocking a brain receptor, GIPR, can aid in weight loss. The study, conducted on mice, revealed that stimulating GIPR in the brainstem suppresses appetite, while blocking it in the hypothalamus achieves a similar effect. This research could lead to the development of more effective obesity treatments. The study highlights the role of dual agonists for the glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide receptor (GIPR) in managing type 2 diabetes and obesity. The findings suggest that GIPR agonists and antagonists act on different brain regions, enhancing weight loss when combined with GLP-1-based drugs.
