Gig-Work Apps Push for Deregulation in U.S. Healthcare, Raising Concerns Over Worker Rights
Gig-work applications, often referred to as 'Uber for nurses,' are lobbying for deregulation in the healthcare sector to expand gig work opportunities. According to a report by the AI Now Institute, these tech platforms are using artificial intelligence to manage staffing in hospitals and healthcare facilities, which impacts workers' rights, protections, and pay. The report highlights that these platforms allow nurses to bid on shifts, with the lowest bid securing the job, and use AI to set pay rates and monitor performance. This model has proven lucrative, with several platforms reaching billion-dollar valuations. However, it raises concerns about the erosion of worker protections and the quality of patient care. Since 2022, legislation has been introduced in 17 states to exempt these platforms from regulations applied to traditional healthcare staffing agencies.
