Macomb Celebrates Monopoly Inventor Lizzie Magie with New Sculpture and Interactive Experience
Macomb, Illinois, is set to honor Lizzie Magie, the inventor whose 1903 game design inspired Monopoly, with a new sculpture and the seasonal opening of Macombopoly. The event, scheduled for May 9, 2026, marks Magie's 160th birthday. The new sculpture of Uncle Pennybags, also known as Mr. Monopoly, will be unveiled in downtown Macomb, joining existing sculptures that celebrate Magie's legacy. Macombopoly is an interactive, app-powered board game experience that takes place across the streets and storefronts of the historic Courthouse Square. The game, which has attracted thousands of players, aims to connect visitors with Magie's story and the local community.
