NYC First Lady Rama Duwaji to Lead Islamic Calligraphy Retreat in Europe Amidst Criticism
New York City First Lady Rama Duwaji, wife of Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is scheduled to serve as the 'artist-in-residence' for an Islamic-centered women's retreat in Porto, Portugal. This marks her third such trip this year with The Women Sanctuary. The 'Journey through Islamic Calligraphy' retreat will take place in two sessions from September 16-21 and September 25-30. The retreat's website indicates that participants will explore the history of Islam in Portugal and engage in illustration workshops led by Duwaji. The event also includes activities like picnics, poolside hangouts, and walks, emphasizing spiritual reflection and nourishment. The cost for the retreat ranges from $4,300 for a shared room to $5,260 for a private room, and it will be held at a manor house in Arcos de Valdevez. This follows previous retreats Duwaji attended in Mallorca, Spain, and Corsica, France, earlier this year.
