Del Mar Considers Housing Development Amid Erosion Concerns
The city of Del Mar, California, is evaluating the potential for housing development on the North Bluff, a 19.3-acre area facing significant erosion risks. The city needs to accommodate 113 low-income units by 2029 to meet state mandates. However, the bluff's vulnerability to erosion, exacerbated by climate change, poses challenges. A proposed 259-unit project, Seaside Ridge, includes 85 affordable units but faces opposition due to environmental concerns. The city is exploring upzoning the bluff to allow for higher density housing, despite its own projections showing substantial erosion by 2100.
