The Earliest Snowfall Records in These Northeast States
Snow can arrive in parts of the Northeast well before winter, with historical records showing some surprisingly early dates. Mount Washington Observatory in New Hampshire recorded its first snow as early as August 31, while the state’s earliest measurable snowfall elsewhere occurred on September 17, 1965. Buffalo, New York, recorded its earliest snowfall on September 20, 1956, and Massachusetts saw an inch of snow on September 26, 1942. In Maryland, Baltimore’s earliest measurable snowfall occurred on October 10, 1979. As temperatures cool through fall, more early snowfall records could come into focus.
