Richmond Celebrates Centennial of Historic Municipal Pool
The Richmond Municipal Natatorium, also known as the Plunge, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Opened in 1926, the pool has been a significant part of Richmond, California's community life. Originally filled with a mix of saltwater from the San Francisco Bay and fresh water, the pool was a marvel of its time. Over the years, it has faced challenges, including damage from the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and a period of closure due to deterioration. However, community efforts led to its restoration and reopening in 2010. The city plans to commemorate the centennial with a special event on August 15, featuring a building dedication, speeches, and demonstrations by lifeguards.
