Flint State Park Development Transforms Former Industrial Site into Public Green Space
Flint, Michigan, is witnessing a significant transformation with the development of its first state park, Flint State Park, along a 3-mile stretch of the Flint River. This project, supported by $30.2 million in funding from the Michigan Legislature, aims to unify five distinct park units—Chevy Commons, Mott Park Recreation Area, Riverbank Park, Vietnam Veterans Park, and Happy Hollow Nature Area—through non-motorized trails. The park is designed to provide residents with increased access to outdoor recreation and to reconnect them with the Flint River. The site, once a major General Motors manufacturing facility, had become a contaminated brownfield due to decades of industrial use. The transformation began with the vision to convert the area into connected green spaces, a project initiated in 2004 by Christina Kelly of the Genesee County Land Bank Authority. The park is now open to the public, with ongoing construction to complete additional improvements and amenities.
