Baltimore Designates Tuliptree as New Official City Tree After Public Vote
Baltimore has officially unveiled the Tuliptree as its new city tree, a decision made after nearly 2,000 residents participated in a public vote. This initiative, led by TreeBaltimore and the mayor's office, aims to adapt the city's urban forest to a changing environment. The Tuliptree was selected from a shortlist of six climate-resilient tree species native to the region. Mayor Brandon Scott stated that the new official tree signifies Baltimore's commitment to fostering a more diverse and resilient urban forest capable of withstanding climate change, pests, and diseases. The previous official tree, the 'Chanticleer' pear or Callery pear, chosen in 1974, was found to be invasive and outcompeting native species. The Tuliptree will be incorporated into plantings across Baltimore's streets and parks starting in 2027.
