Republic of Minerva: The Failed Attempt to Create a Tax-Free Nation
In the early 1970s, a millionaire attempted to establish a new nation called the Republic of Minerva on an artificial island in the South Pacific. The project, driven by libertarian ideals, aimed to create a sovereign state free from taxes and government regulation. Sand was dredged onto a coral reef, a flag was raised, and independence was declared. However, the venture quickly collapsed when a neighboring kingdom, Tonga, claimed the territory. The Republic of Minerva failed to gain international recognition, marking the end of one of history's boldest micronation experiments.
