Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Board Approves $19.9 Billion Dulles Airport Overhaul
The board overseeing Washington Dulles International Airport has approved a comprehensive $19.9 billion overhaul plan. This extensive project includes a significant allocation of $3.75 billion for the construction of new underground tunnels, intended to replace the existing 'People Mover' vehicles that transport passengers across the tarmac. The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) stated that the reconstruction of the main terminal, estimated at $6.2 billion, is slated to commence in late 2027. Following this, the construction of the new tunnels and an extension to a new concourse is expected to begin in early 2029, with a projected completion date of 2034. This initiative aims to modernize and enhance the primary international airport serving the Washington D.C. region, addressing current infrastructure limitations and improving passenger experience.
