Connecticut Department of Transportation Begins $1.6 Billion New Haven Line Upgrade for Faster Service
The Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) has commenced work on a $1.6 billion project to upgrade the New Haven line, aiming to provide faster train service by 2035. This project, which involves upgrading 3.1 miles of track between Stratford and Bridgeport, is part of a larger effort to improve one of the oldest and busiest commuter rail lines in the U.S. The first phase of the project is being executed under a $340 million contract with Yonkers Contracting Company, with funding contributions from the Federal Rail Administration, Connecticut, and Amtrak. The project includes replacing catenary lines, constructing a new station, and upgrading roadbeds to allow higher train speeds. However, the completion of the entire project will require an additional $1.3 billion in funding.
