Indianapolis-Carmel-Muncie Metro Area Receives Failing Grade in Air Pollution Report
The Indianapolis-Carmel-Muncie metro area has been given an 'F' grade in the American Lung Association's latest State of the Air report, which evaluates air quality based on emissions data from 2022 to 2024. The report highlights significant levels of smog and soot pollution, which are known to cause severe health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, asthma, and cognitive decline. The region is ranked as the 11th most polluted for year-round particle pollution and 14th for short-term particle pollution. Over 670,000 children in Indiana are exposed to unhealthy air, with their developing lungs being particularly vulnerable.
