Archbishop Coakley Discusses Patriotism at Knights of Columbus Event
Archbishop Paul Coakley, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, addressed the Knights of Columbus Supreme Convention in Denver, focusing on the concept of patriotism. Coakley emphasized that true patriotism is a religious virtue rather than a political one, rooted in gratitude and familial love. He distinguished between authentic patriotism and nationalism, warning against the latter's tendency to idolize the nation. Coakley cited St. Thomas Aquinas to illustrate the duty of gratitude owed to one's country, akin to the duty owed to one's parents. He stressed that patriotism involves recognizing the imperfections of one's nation while striving for justice and peace.
