Puerto Rico Implements Water Rationing Amid Severe Drought
Puerto Rico has announced water rationing measures in San Juan and other major cities due to a severe drought affecting nearly 25% of the U.S. territory. Starting Friday, over 180,000 customers will face 48-hour water cutoffs on a rotating schedule. July 2026 was the driest month in San Juan in over 120 years, with extreme heat compounding the crisis. Governor Jenniffer González attributed the situation to worsening weather conditions and acknowledged the long-standing underinvestment in water infrastructure. Emergency measures include distributing potable water via trucks, prioritizing hospitals and elderly residences.
